Understanding, Meaning,
and Planetary Flourishing

The consilience of empirical science, the creative arts, and service towards planetary flourishing for all forms of mind and ecological systems.

"I have steadily endeavoured to keep my mind free so as to give up any hypothesis, however much beloved (and I cannot resist forming one on every subject), as soon as facts are shown to be opposed to it"

Charles Darwin,
The Autobiography of Charles Darwin, ed. Francis Darwin, intro. H. James Brix (Amherst, NY: Prometheus Books, 2000; originally published 1887), 55.

"The notion that we have limited access to the workings of our minds is difficult to accept because, naturally, it is alien to our experience, but it is true: you know far less about yourself than you feel you do."  "success = talent + luck, great success = a little more talent + a lot of luck" Daniel Kahneman, Thinking Fast and Slow, (London: Allen Lane, 2011), 52, 177.

"An important truth: you are not the same person at all times. As your mood varies ... some features of your cognitive machinery vary with it ... Or to put it differently, you are not always the same person, and you are less consistent over time than you think. But somewhat reassuringly, you are more similar to yourself yesterday than you are to another person today." Daniel Kahneman, Oliver Sibony, and Cass Sunstein, Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment, (London: William Collins, 2021), 89, 91.

Favourite Quotes

"Knowledge, split into a thousand isolated fragments, no longer generated wisdom ... In the midst of unprecedented learning popular ignorance flourished and chose its exemplars to rule the great cities of the world."

Will Durant,
The Story of Philosophy, 2nd ed. (New York: Pocket Books, 1961; originally published 1926), xiv.

"The ancient covenant is in pieces; man knows at last that he is alone in the universe's unfeeling immensity, out of which he emerged only by chance. His destiny is nowhere spelled out, nor is his duty. The kingdom above or the darkness below: it is for him to choese."

Jacques Monod,
Chance and Necessity: An Essay on the Natural Philosophy of Modern Biology, trans. Austryn Wainhouse (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971), 180.

Literature for an examined life

What does it mean to live well? How do we understand our place in the universe? What are minds? What kind of future human-AGI world can we create?

Part scientific quest, part prehistoric epic, and deeply philosophical these books show that only a consilience of all human knowledge can lead to an examined life and win-win actions for all sentient systems.

As Plato's Socrates says, "I say that it is the greatest good for a man to discuss virtue every day and those other things about which you hear me conversing and testing myself and others, for the unexamined life is not worth living."

Plato, Apology, in Plato Complete Works, ed. John M. Cooper (Indianapolis: Hackett, 1997), 33 (38a)
